Book Reviews The Rangers Woman By Carol Finch

“The Ranger’s Woman” by Carol Finch is an extraordinary adventure of two people that had been raised in two different circles of life. One lives on the edge, fighting injustice and taking life as it is thrown his way, the other could be sitting pretty with her fortune but yearns to be free and make her own choices. Fate and deception would throw these two wild hearts together to find their own adventure together in the wilds of Texas. Piper Sullivan was being polished and educated; the heir to the Sullivan fortune, her father would have nothing less than his daughter to marry a rich aristocrat, a match that he arranged himself. Roarke Sullivan had already lost one daughter, Penelope, to a lowly Captain serving in the Army and he would not have another daughter marry and live beneath what he feels is unworthy of the family name. But Piper had other plans, she was free-willed and full of spirit, no amount of Sullivan fortune was going to keep her under her father’s thumb and she certainly wasn’t going to marry a man that she didn’t love. She knew she had to run, run as fast as she could to Fort Davis where she could find refuge and freedom with her sister Penny. She would use her education as a teacher and fend for herself in the rugged, untamed territory of Texas.Afraid of being discovered for whom she was and sent back to her father and also afraid of being taken advantage of by unruly men, Piper disguises herself in frumpy widow’s clothes, carries her cane and takes on the part of the widow Agatha. This disguise would see her through the stagecoach ride until desperadoes rob the coach and her life and plans are placed into the hands of a stranger, Quinn Callahan. The stranger who sat across from the widow Agatha on the stagecoach was a hooligan, she thought. Nothing more than a drifting gambler who roamed endlessly from town to town, fleecing unsuspecting men of their earnings. The coach ride seemed unbearable as this traveler “Cal” worked on every nerve she had. “Piper hated to admit it, but she actually enjoyed their banter.” Before this ride was over, Piper would learn that she wasn’t the only passenger hiding their identity. Cal was actually a Texas Ranger, his only goal was to hunt down the bandits that killed his friend, a fellow Texas Ranger. He only had one thought on this coach ride, discover who is behind the coach hold-ups, follow them to their hideout and take them out, one by one. But not everything goes as planned, before long the true identity of both people is revealed to each other and neither will ever breathe, think or live the same.”The Ranger’s Woman” is more than the classic historical western romance. The adventure and excitement is evident from the first chapter and lasts until the finale. The characters are entertaining and humorous with a flow of interaction that keeps the reader turning the page to find out how these two high-spirited souls ever come together. Between gunfights, holdups, kidnappings and the almighty Roarke Sullivan, it is hard to believe that these two ever find common ground, much less happiness.
